Links Between Oral Health and Heart Disease

LIKE OUR OTHER PATIENTS HERE AT DYNAMIC SMILE DESIGN, you want to take the very best care of your heart, right? Of course! Did you know that your toothbrush is just as good at defending your heart as regular exercise?! According to Dr. Puig, “A number of recent studies suggest that gum disease—and other oral health issues—are DIRECTLY related to heart problems.”

In a recent study by the American Academy of Periodontology, it was reported that people who have periodontal disease are nearly twice as likely to have heart disease. Another study found that common oral health problems, including cavities, gingivitis and/or missing teeth are as reliable at predicting heart disease as are bad cholesterol levels! Shocking, huh!?

While there’s still a LOT MORE to learn about these connections, the evidence seems to be mounting each year, suggesting that bacteria in your mouth can lead directly to blockages and clot risks. There are more theories that revolve around your body’s defenses against bacteria, including the natural response of inflammation.

Though the EXACT relationships between cardiovascular disease and periodontal disease are still unclear, today’s research continues to conclude that there’s definitely a connection. However, DON’T use this as an excuse to ignore all of the other things you can do to keep your heart healthy! Keep eating healthy, exercise regularly, and take care of risk factors like high cholesterol, diabetes, or high blood pressure.

DETECTION goes a long way in preventing problems in the future, so be sure to set up an appointment with Dr. Puig to make sure you aren’t at risk!
